Bishop Burton is a village in East Riding, Yorkshire.  It lies on the boundary of the Yorkshire Wolds hills, home to the 79-mile long Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail.  Bishop Burton was named after the Archbishop of York, who lived there during the Middle Ages.  Its original name was ‘Burtone’, which means farmstead, and it has also been known as South Burton.  Farming has always been at the heart of village life, and the enclosures of the 18th century are still visible today.  Farming remains an important part of the economy, with the local Bishop Burton College offering courses such as agriculture and animal management.  Bishop Burton has its own conservation area covering most of the village.
